Although small , The Cheese and Wine Shop is a little cornucopia of fantasic foods and drinks (read TARDIS like). The only qualification is that it has to be the best.
Terry Farr the owner goes out of his way to source the best produce, be this local cheese's or from further field. A huge selection of the best cheese is available, including rare hand made artisan cheese's from around the world. His wine selection has a price for all pockets with advice on hand. But it's not just cheese and wine, it's jams, traclements, oils, vinegars, pasta, rice, pates, bacons, hams, sausage, olives, one of the finest selection of Spanish ingredients, you name it if its the best (and NOT available in a supermarket!)it's probably here.

We've been a customer of Acorn Dairy for about 8 years, and I feel very privillaged that we have a local (and organic) farm still making door step deliveries.
They are an excellent family run business, we get weekly updates on the bill on whats going on down the farm, keeping you in touch with farming trials and tribulations and where your milk comes from. They also run open days and local walks. They have also been involved in organic milk research through Newcastle university.
The milk is excellent, they also sell via the deliveries all manor of other produce which you preorder. We buy local organic eggs through them.
They have cows at the local dairy location in Darlington, and also at pastures in Wenslydale.
Last year they converted some of this milk into a limited edition Wenslydale cheese, made at Hawes, and was available only through them or the local cheese and wine shop in Darlington.
To cut costs and excess miles they do not deliver daily, depending on where you live it might be bi-weekly, which is fine , we get milk on Fridays and Mondays to last us the week. And for example this was still the case this Easter on both bank holidays.
Milk is still delivered in glass bottles which are returned. In the early days it was suggested that they delivered in plastic, but I think this was dropped by public opinion, the cost went up to enable them to deliver in glass, but thats what people wanted. They deliver to local businesses and the local supermarkets in plastic containers.

A fantastic family run farm, with old buildings now converted into farm shop and coffee house.
Chris Hodgson is a smashing bloke who will do anything for you. If he hasn't got what you wanted he'll try to get it and/or sell you something else!. Chickens are excellent, eggs have won best organic egg award. Expensive if you buy individual portions, my tip is buy a whole bird and joint it yourself. The meat quality is supurb, you can see the chickens running around in the fields. Chris now raises his own orgainic pigs, lambs and Aberdeen Angus on site. All but the Beef is slaughtered on site (I think I'm right in saying!), so minimum stress. The lamb has to be tried , the breed is Black Faced Northumbrian which is getting wide recognition as a top quality meat. I think he still raises these off site in Northumbria with a partnership farm.
The beef is top quality, dry hung on the bone for anywhere between 21 to 28 days. And you can tell.
The pork is good but not exceptional (unlike his other meats), however his home made bacon, gamon and sausages are!.
The only down side is because they are a small producer most of the meat is jointed up and put into vac bags to sell fresh or then frozen. But as with all things you can always ask Chris for something that isn't vac bagged.
The shop sells local flour, bread, organic veg and fruit (which unfortunately tends to be non local) as well as a wide variety of other pulses etc. Dairy produce is also available, usually from acorn dairy which is just up the road.
The coffee shop is good, with free trade tea and coffee and home made cakes.
Also sells local game, logs, plants, eco products, and when asked mutton.
