Third (or so) generation family butcher at 8, Bedford Road, Kempston (near the TA centre). Run by son Clive & dad Peter. Good quality meats & other goods - eggs locally sourced, a selection of meats for the local Eastern European community (home smoked & preserved), game in season, bones for the dog. Always prepared to do a special order, always busy, so don't be in a rush, especially in December, the queue is always out of the door. Organic free range chickens apx £7.50 for 4-5lb. Large (I can get 8-10 good servings from a single bird), succulent, tasty - no comparison to supermarket chicken!! A good old fashioned butcher - personal service, they know their trade - but take your time, they do like to chat to everyone!

Only opened a couple of weeks ago, but has a treasure trove of independently produced ranges, but the main event is the cheese counter, closely followed by the cold meats selection. Very helpful staff, offers to taste the cheese before you buy, buy as little or as much as you like - hand made cheddars, unusual cheeses (nettle wrapped!), organic too. And a sandwich bar which looks very inviting. A spin-off from the (now closed) Nicholls Brasserie (was on The Embankment, Bedford) and The Harpur Coffee Company next door, which itself serves good coffees, wicked shakes & THE most delicious cakes & pastries. Treat yourself after all tht shopping!

Italian family business, established 20+years. Pizzeria open Wed - Sun evenings (Takeaway only & do NOT deliver). VERY reasonable prices, freshly made delicious AUTHENTIC Napoli pizzas!. But the secret is 'out the back' in the vine-covered yard - a traditional Italian bakery - no preservatives, no chemicals, no fillers - just plain honest bread in a variety of shapes, sizes & tastes. Keeps well, toasts a treat when a few days old, freezes well too. Buy in the pizzeria when open or anytime through the side gate - someone is always around. Also sell on Bedford market Saturdays & Wednesdays. Ask for Sandra or Enrico.
