Broom House is really a livestock farm - although some arable crops such as barley, peas, triticale, lupins and broad beans are grown - with the aim of producing our own feed for the animals.
We have a herd of beautiful Aberdeen Angus cattle, as well as a large flock of Lleyn sheep and an increasing herd of Saddleback pigs. The aim is to breed all our own replacement animals on the farm, enabling us to improve the quality of our livestock through breeding.
All our animals are reared outside on grass pastures in the summer and in woods and straw barns during the muddiest winter months.
We manage our livestock to the highest standards of welfare, with minimum use of medicines and bought in feeds and in October 2007 we obtained full organic status for the farm. We are also members of the Farm Assured British Beef and Lamb Scheme and the Red Meat Industry Forum
I can't recommend Broom House Farm highly enough; their meat is always excellent and properly hung, cut and prepared as you wish by the helpful and knowledgable staff! I always buy "special occasion" cuts from them - they even provided the meat for my wedding - but their cheaper cuts are also excellent (I get through a lot of their minced mutton) and the sausages are so good I have to take them to friends all over the country!
I've just left Durham for Pinner and am going to miss them no end...now, can anyone down here recommend a good butcher.....??!
I can highly recommend Broom House Farm. The quality of the meat is exceptional and the staff are helpful and friendly. If there is a particular cut of meat not display you only have to ask and they will prepare it for you. The mutton is also great when it is available. They also have a great selection of cookery books which you are free to browse through to get ideas for recipes.
There is a recently opened 'log cabin' coffee shop on the site which serves homemade dishes in peaceful surroundings.
A real gem of a place! The on-farm butchery serves their own fantastic beef, pork and lamb (and the mutton is wonderful too) - all organic, reared on the farm and slaughtered locally. They also offer free range eggs from their flock of happy chickens. The staff are all friendly, helpful and knowledgeable - and they have fresh brewed coffee and homemade cake on offer whilst you wait!
