The restaurant opened in 1981 and as its reputation and success grew it spread further along Prince Albert Street as properties became available. Today it covers three shop fronts and inhabits one of the distinctive flat iron buildings of Brighton’s famous Georgian Lanes. Its labyrinthine interior provides a variety of rooms to eat in.

Food for Friends was one of the first vegetarian restaurants in Brighton. Today it continues with its ethos of innovative cuisine. Vegetarian food here is not ‘just a load of old lentils’ but surpasses most other cooking in its inspiration, flavour and presentation.

Food for Friends is one of a few restaurants around the world that can genuinely claim to be a driving force in creative cookery. With three recipe books by one of the founders Simon Hope, to its credit the restaurant continually searches for fresh influences from every country, region, culture and religion.

We have always used the freshest produce, organic - whenever possible. Grains and flours are all organic as are most of our wines, beers and ciders. All our desserts, cakes and pastries are made daily on the premises and this allows us to cater for specific dietary requirements. In addition our menus are designed to reflect seasonal availability of fresh produce.

I preferred the original food for friends with the wooden tables and chairs. It was a wonderful community and you would always meet interesting folk there. The food was superb and the sweets were to die for. However they have gone upmarket and lost their original roots. The atmosphere is colder. The prices have increased many times and the service is not so good.
There is a great book Food for Friends with some brilliant recipes.

Brighton's original vegetarian restaurant which has been around for as long as I can remember. They use fresh produce, organic - whenever possible and the menu reflects seasonal availability of fresh produce.
